The winner of the April Fools jokes goes to:
Rapper Snoop Dogg converts to Mormonism
By Aaron Nichols
DIAMOND BAR, California (AP) — In what some may consider an unexpected move, rap artist “Snoop Dogg” has reportedly converted to Mormonism after nearly a year of study with the fast-growing, Utah-based faith.
In a statement, a spokeswoman for Snoop Dogg — whose real name is Calvin Broadus — said he considers himself extremely fortunate to have discovered such a deep sense of spiritual fulfillment at this stage in his life.
“Mr. Broadus is also very pleased to find that his family is as enthusiastic about attending church services as he is,” the spokeswoman said.
However, Snoop Dogg has not been enthusiastic about publicly sharing his experience and declined to be interviewed by CNN for this article. In fact, he reportedly informed producers of his E! reality show “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood” that this particular aspect of his family’s life was off-limits to the cameras. Still, he left open the possibility of addressing the subject in future episodes.
According to the Associated Press, Snoop Dogg was first introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the Mormon Church is officially known, after attending a Gladys Knight concert in an LDS meeting house in Los Angeles.
Knight, who very publicly discusses her conversion to Mormonism several years ago, invited Snoop Dogg to what is known to the Mormon faithful as “Family Home Evening,” a church program that encourages families to set aside Monday evenings for gospel-centered lessons and family togetherness.
Though Snoop Dogg has been hesitant to publicly discuss his recent spiritual journey, he commented on the experience of attending his first “Family Home Evening” in a recent interview with People Magazine.
“I was hooked from the start,” Snoop Dogg said. “We talked about the purpose of life, played Mousetrap, and ate brownies. The kids thought it was off the hook, for real.”
In what Snoop Dogg now thinks was anything but a coincidence, Mormon missionaries had knocked on his door just one week before the Knight concert. He said he had initially turned them away because of what he knew about the strict Mormon health code, which prohibits members from smoking, drinking alcohol, and using drugs.
“Y’all know me,” he said grinning broadly. “There were just certain things the old me — the “natural man” — needed to do. And these young guys are telling me that God’s not down with disrespecting ourselves. But it’s cool now.”
Snoop Dogg said his conversion marks the end of his old life, one that included frequent run-ins with the law. Snoop Dogg was convicted in 1990 of cocaine possession and charged with gun possession after a 1993 traffic stop. In 1997, he pleaded guilty in exchange for a lighter sentence.
In 1996, Snoop Dogg was acquitted of murder after a purported gangbanger was killed by gunfire from the vehicle in which Snoop Dogg was traveling.
Snoop Dogg dismisses critics who claim his conversion is intended to placate a Salt Lake County judge, before whom he is appealing an alleged probation violation.
“Listen, the haters will say what they will,” Snoop Dogg said. “I can only do what I feel is right.”

okay i am lds and im having a hard time believing this and personally think it was an april fools joke. But i know that it could happen because maybe it was just his time to realize the true church

I thought my conversion to the Church was remarkable, but this story speaks to the truth that anything can happen and anyone can feel the love and presence of the Lord.
What an interesting and yet uplifting bit of news. Thanks for sharing.

great April’s fool story. I could have been convinced right up to the last paragraph. Since you can’t be baptized if you are on probation, the story crumbles at that one point.

As someone else pointed out, it’s not possible to be baptized while on probation, so this story can’t be true, so therefore it’s just mocking the religion.
As someone who is LDS, I find this April fool’s joke to be tasteless and and somewhat offensive. I don’t appreciate my religion being mocked in such a fashion.
If such a thing had actually ever happened, it would not have been anyone’s business in the first place, and there would be no reason to publicize it in the first place.

to bugaboo: By referring to the church that Snoop Dogg has realized as “the true church,” are you insinuating that all other churches (or faiths for that matter)are “fake”, “untrue”, “unreal”, or any other antonym of the word “true”?

Bring on the fun. I’m all about laughing at the oddities of the faith.
Add this one to the whole “did you know So-And-So is a Mormon?” list. It’s pretty funny.
As for those in the church like M.H. … lighten up a little and have a grin! Nothing disrespectful about this story at ALL. Except maybe it would kill Snoop’s image a bit.

AWSOME!! BEST April Fools I’ve had played on me in at least 50 years, no kidding I’m that old! I LOVE Snoop, I think it would be fantastic if he would convert. I think his “image” is not who he really is. The guy is smart. I saw him defend himself in a People’s court episode years ago, and I was impressed! I’m LDS, and I think that everyone is entitled to thier “being-ness” and choices. LH: Lighten up! Diversity is the spice of life, and believe it or not, Heavenly Father has a GREAT sense of humor!! I’m an active LDS member and I think this story is pretty funny. To anyone who took offense at this joke, I recommend that you try to be a bit less sensitive. One who can’t laugh at themselves is in danger of becoming very bitter and angry at any little thing that may annoy them. That’s not very healthy nor is it a part of the gospel.

What!? The Mormon Church having fun??? Too many members say there is no place for it. But, I beg to differ. Check out the following quote. (You may be surprised who said it.)
“I said to the Brethren on day, ‘Let us make the gospel and the Church fun for the young people of the church. Bring in some fun for the young.’
You can be serious, and you must be serious…But you can have a little fun along with it.”

You know what? I am lds and if this was an “april fool’s joke” this is just wrong. Our religion does not go around playing jokes about other religions… This is just disrespectful to not only lds members but to god as well. Why is it always the mormons that get made fun of or made a joke of?? We are simply just worshipping God and Jesus Christ. People need to respect that already and respect our faith of what we truly feel and believe in. Once again we do not make fun of and do not disrespect other religions in an way!!

I’m LDS, and i can’t believe that you would put restrictions on Gods Power!! COZ THATS WHAT YOU’RE DOING! Moses parted the water by the power of God, Jesus Christ rose from the grave, surely He can have an influence over His children. By thinking that this couldn’t POSSIBLY be true because of who the man in the spotlight is, tells me that little faith and cynicism is rife!Stop playing into satans hands. Meg you’re a fool. Go read National Geographic, take a biology 1010 class, or maybe actually find some evidence for yourself. THE WORLD IS WARMING. It cannot be denied. Anyone who won’t accept the facts is an idiot. Oh yeah, and Snoop Dog is slowly becoming a scientologist. I met him in an airport on a trip for soccer and talked to him about it. Stupid celebrities. Stupid religions. Before you call me disrespectful go research what they believe. If you can even find any information seeing as they sue anyone who publishes anything about them. What losers. L Ron Hubbard is quoting as saying (20 years before starting scientology) “If I wanted to get rich I’d start a religion.” Don’t eat his filth.

The April fools joke wasn’t nearly as funny as those who automatically accept it as true, and then emailed the story to all their friends. Ha!
I’m a devout lifelong LDS person too, and one of the things that keeps me coming back is that it’s OK to laugh at my fellow saints who are so eager to believe this kind of thing. It does however make it more challenging to prove that Mormons have substantiative faith instead of blind faith.
To non-members I do believe that gullible element is just as evident in any church, and that does not reflect on the majority of LDS people. We can laugh at it in fact, because there is real substance of our faith – the evidence of things not seen, which most people only hope for.

I thought this story was so amazing. There is nothing negative about this article. yes it was an April Fools joke, but it represented the church in a great way and will create more curiosity about the church. Who knows maybe Snoop or someone else will read it and actually gain an interest in the church. We are a church that believes in miracles and a church that believes that God works in ways that seem strange to man, but by these small and simple means bringeth about His eternal purposes (Alma 37: 6-7). Another thing that is important for us to remember as members of this church is that there is so much work for us to be doing and so many good things going on right before us. We really are wasting time by focusing on the negative things that others say or do towards the church. Let’s do some good!

What a great story! Heh! Well written.
I have been LDS for 25 years, and to laugh at the possibility of Snoop Dogg converting is silly cuz it can happen to anyone willing to be open minded about spirituality. But for some of you people who say that the LDS church is the ‘only’ true church…. that’s just plain silly!

Could you imagine snoop giving a talk on Sunday?

OK, I am SOOOO gullible. I called everyone I know and told them that Snoop converted. I had hour long conversations with my friends, neighbors and fellow members about how cool this was and how much influence he had on an entire culture. I now have to go back to everyone I told (which is a lot) and say “hey, I’m an idiot because I believe everything I read”. I can’t believe I fell for that. It was a great April fools joke. Got me!

It was a huge surprise when I heard about this story. However, I never thought this one to be impossible. Remember Korn’s Brian Welch? He left everything fame, drugs, and money for Christianity.

This is freakin’ hilarious!!! Snoop deserves an emmy for this. To all you who are offended, You gotta just chill out. If you can’t laugh at yourself and who you are (i.e. LDS) then you need to look into yourself. The late President Hinckley was able to laugh at himself, why can’t you?

On my way to work this morning, I got a strange SMS about Snoop Dogg joining Mormonism! As you all did, I also searched Google, found it a hoax, and I had a good laugh!
I found it FUNNNNNNNNNNY! If we, as members of the LDS Church can’t laugh at ourselves, then we need more time spent with Napoleon Dynamite!

Greatest AF joke I have ever read. I doubted it when it finally got filtered through friend email groups, but you know you look at that and start thinking “just maybe”, until you read the very very bottom.
To those that think there is not a SUPERSTAR that is a member of the LDS church, I have three words: Gladys FREAKING Knight! She was bigger than Mr. Dogg in her day.
Other notable “stars” of the LDS faith:
Steve Young – former NFL player
Johnny Miller – former PGA champion
Thurl Bailey – former NBA player
Billy Casper – former PGA champion
Brandon Flowers – musician (The Killers)
Brendon Urie – musician (Panic! at the Disco)
She-Daisy – country music group
Danny White – former NFL player
Tom Chambers – former NBA player
Donnie & Marie Osmond – musicians
Gifford Nielson – former NFL player
Mark Wilson – former NFL player
Ron Fellows – former NFL player
The Jets – music group
Andy Reid – NFL coach
Merlin Olsen – former NFL player
Scot Alexander – musician (Dishwalla)
Todd Christensen – former NFL player
Jason Buck – former NFL player
There are a lot more, but you get the idea.
